Satellite observations indicate a correlation between anomalies observed in the ionosphere and stratosphere and the occurrence of earthquakes. These anomalies include changes in electric and magnetic field components, variations in electron density, ions, ionic compositions, and their temperatures in the ionosphere, as well as changes in stratospheric temperature. This article investigates these space-based precursors and the payloads used to measure these anomalies. For each payload, its components, operation method, mass, power budget, and installation considerations are described. Additionally, analysis results of several earthquakes in Iran and recent global earthquakes using data from these payloads have been examined.
The study of these payloads shows that the electric field detector instrument in the ULF range is one of the best for earthquake precursor detection. A double standard deviation index was considered for identifying anomalies in several earthquakes in Iran, and ULF signal amplification was observed during satellite passage over the earthquake epicenters for earthquakes larger than 5.8. Several earthquakes in Iran were also analyzed using data from the TIMED satellite's 10-channel radiometer payload, with a 1.5 standard deviation index considered for identifying anomalies. Examination of average and maximum temperatures over a one-month period showed that anomalies were observable one week before the earthquake occurrence, and for strong earthquakes above magnitude 7, a clear anomaly effect in this parameter was observed 14 to 16 days before the earthquake.
Finally, after various assessments, the electric field detector payload in the ULF range, the search coil magnetometer, the tri-band beacon, and the 10-channel radiometer payload measuring stratospheric temperature were introduced as suitable payloads for earthquake precursor detection in Iran. A native platform was considered, and its subsystems were introduced. Given the mass budget, power, and stabilization and attitude control system of this native satellite, the tri-band beacon was proposed as the final payload for this platform, and its specifications were stated. It is worth noting that the electric field detector payload requires four booms longer than four meters, making it impossible to use on a platform using a gravity gradient boom for stabilization. The search coil magnetometer also requires one boom. In the native platform, due to the gravity gradient boom, using the search coil magnetometer was not possible unless used as a boom tip mass, which is feasible in composite booms but not applicable to this platform. The 10-channel radiometer also required high power and mass, which was not possible given the native platform requirements. Therefore, the tri-band beacon was ultimately specified as the satellite's final payload. This payload transmits three in-phase signals in VHF, UHF, and L-band. These signals undergo Faraday rotation and group delay while passing through the ionosphere. On Earth, these signals are received by a chain of receivers, their phase differences are processed, and based on that, a vertical profile or two-dimensional image of ionospheric electron density can be extracted. The use of the satellite’s store and forward capacity for transferring data from new ground-based seismological stations was also proposed.

When seismic waves travel from the bedrock into the soil layers, resonance occurs. Generally, the concept of resonance means that the level of damage to surface structures increases. The closer the characteristics of the soil layers are to each other, the less resonance occurs; conversely, the more different these layers are from one another, the greater the resonance. Therefore, the presence of soft soil over bedrock causes the amplified acceleration to be transferred to the foundation of the structure, increasing the likelihood of damage to the structure. Topographic amplification refers to the phenomenon where seismic waves are enhanced or altered as they interact with the topography of a site, such as hills, valleys, and ridges. This amplification can significantly influence the seismic response of structures, leading to increased ground motion and potentially greater damage during an earthquake. Investigating topographic amplification and its effects on the seismic response of topographic sites is an important issue that has attracted considerable interest from many researchers. Studies in the area of topographical influences have shown that the nature of the terrain is instrumental in influencing the level of damage caused by earthquakes. Local topographical formations can enhance intense ground movements during earthquakes, resulting in significant damage.

Iran is located in a seismically active region, with many areas in the country adjacent to various topographies, especially hills. Given the presence of active faults in the country and a history of significant earthquakes, it is essential that the design and construction of structures are carried out in a way that provides sufficient resistance to these influential factors. Studies and research conducted on the effects of topography and the phenomenon of seismic wave amplification as they pass through surface layers have shown that topography has a considerable impact on the extent of earthquake damage.

In this research, the hill model in the form of a semi-sinusoidal shape is examined in two layers, as well as the effects of this type of site on the amplification of ground response. By modeling several semi-sine hills with different stratifications using FLAC software under Rayleigh wave conditions, the impact of topography is investigated. Before conducting the modeling, the accuracy of the analytical method must be verified. For this purpose, validation studies from Wang (1982) and results from other researchers will be used to authenticate the analysis of two problems. Finally, to ensure the accuracy of the FLAC software, a similar model will be constructed, and by applying a Rayleigh wave, the desired parameters will be determined at various points of the site (semi-sinusoidal hills) and compared with the graphs from the article. This research examines how a frequently found topographical feature, particularly semi-sinusoidal hills, influences the seismic reaction of the Earth's surface when exposed to vertically propagating SV waves.

The main objective of this research is to examine the effects of various layering at a specific type of site, namely semi-sinuous hills. The study aims to model and analyze the seismic response of this type of site, investigating the impact of surface topography on seismic behavior and comparing the results obtained from the analysis under different conditions. In this research, efforts have been made to investigate the seismic behavior of sinuous hills under different layering conditions to determine the effects of soil characteristics in the layers, as well as the thickness and angle of the layers on the results obtained.

This study investigated how layering affects the response of semi-sinusoidal hills by analyzing hills with two layers, each featuring different layering characteristics and thicknesses. The study also examines the impact of soil characteristics, layering thickness and angle and the position of the looser layer. Different features in layering have an impact on the overall trend of amplification on the top of hills and de-amplification near the toes of hills in response to the horizontal components of displacement, velocity, and acceleration. The study revealed that in two-layer hills, the effects of soil characteristics are greater compared to the thickness and angle of layering. Overall, the most significant change in the acceleration component was observed when the upper layer was loosened in two-layer hills. Conversely, the smallest change in all three components occurred when the upper layer was halved.

Introduction
The present study investigates the effect of a three-dimensional (3D) underground space on the seismic response at the ground surface. The FLAC 3D finite difference code was used and verified against the previous studies. Harmonic SV waves with different frequencies were used in the analyses. The seismic response at the ground surface in the presence of the 3D space was compared to the free field response, and the results were presented in the form of an amplification ratio pattern. From the parametric studies, it was concluded that the amplification pattern at the ground surface is strongly influenced by the dimensions of the underground space, or length ratio (L/W) parameter, where L and W are the length and width of the underground space. The amplification patterns and their values are quite different for the models with different L/W. The results show that two-dimensional consideration of the 3D underground spaces causes more or less estimation of the amplifications at the ground surface. The amplification pattern for the three-dimensional geometry is quite different from two-dimensional geometry. Therefore, it is necessary to consider the three-dimensional geometry in investigating the effect of underground spaces or structures on the ground surface during earthquakes.
Methodology
This study examines the effect of 3D underground spaces on the seismic response of the ground surface. While previous research primarily focused on 2D models, this study validates the results of earlier work by Alielahi and Ramezani (2016) through both FLAC 2D and FLAC 3D simulations. The comparison confirms that the 3D model accurately predicts the 2D results. A comprehensive parametric analysis was then performed to investigate the influence of 3D underground box-shaped spaces, considering varying depths, on surface seismic response. The findings highlight the importance of accounting for 3D effects in seismic studies.
Results and Discussion
A three-dimensional numerical model was developed to investigate the effect of a three-dimensional box-shaped underground space on ground surface seismic responses under vertical SV waves. To account for the geometry of the underground space, a dimensionless parameter, L/W, was introduced, and its variations were examined in the seismic site amplification pattern. The seismic response at the ground surface in the presence of the three-dimensional space was compared with the free-field response, and the results were presented as an amplification pattern.
Summary and Conclusion
A 3D numerical model was developed to investigate the effect of a box-shaped underground space on the seismic response of the ground surface under vertical SV waves. A dimensionless parameter, L/W, was introduced to examine its impact on seismic amplification patterns. Key findings include:
1. The dimensions of the underground space directly affect the surface seismic response, with varying amplification patterns for different L/W values.
2. Complex amplification patterns reflect the influence of underground space geometry.
3. λ/D (dimensionless wavelength) and L/W are critical parameters. Maximum amplification occurs at L/W=1 for λ/D=3 and L/W=10 for λ/D=8. Larger λ/D shifts amplification peaks to higher L/W values.
4. Larger underground structures affect broader regions.
5. Amplification distribution is radial for small L/W values and becomes linear as L/W increases.
6. Simplified 2D models cannot fully capture the effects of 3D underground spaces during earthquakes.
These conclusions apply to an unlined box-shaped cavity in an elastic rock medium under harmonic SV waves and are specific to the studied conditions.

Earthquakes pose a persistent and formidable natural threat, prompting decades of extensive research aimed at mitigating their destructive impact on built infrastructure. The seismic input energy transferred to a structural system is critically governed by both the dynamic properties of the structure and the frequency content of the ground motion. Among the available protective strategies, passive control systems have proven to be highly effective, offering robust solutions for both seismic design of new structures and retrofitting of existing substandard buildings, particularly those with deficient lateral load-resisting systems such as precast concrete frames. Within this category, metallic yielding dampers are widely employed to suppress structural responses by capitalizing on the post-elastic deformation capacity and stable hysteretic behavior of metals. These devices are particularly advantageous due to their ease of fabrication, stable and repeatable cyclic performance, and inherent insensitivity to environmental variations, which collectively ensure long-term operational reliability.
Steel pipe dampers, as a specific subclass, have demonstrated significant capability in dissipating seismic energy through inelastic deformations, thereby protecting primary load-bearing elements from severe damage, while also offering considerable flexibility in their integration within beam-to-column connections. As an advanced refinement of conventional metallic dampers, multi-level yielding mechanisms have been developed to provide adaptive performance under various seismic hazard intensities.
In this context, the present study investigates the efficacy of a novel dual-level steel pipe damper in enhancing the seismic behavior of steel moment-resisting frames (MRFs). To this end, three prototype structures of 4, 8, and 12 stories were analyzed using the SAP2000 software to comprehensively evaluate the influence of the proposed damper on the structural response. Numerical results reveal a marked improvement in the dynamic performance of retrofitted frames, attributable to the adaptive, multi-stage operational characteristics of the damper when subjected to ground motions with diverse frequency contents and strong-motion durations.
Quantitatively, the proposed device achieved substantial average reductions in maximum lateral displacements by 69%, 61%, and 46% for the 4-, 8-, and 12-story frames, respectively. Furthermore, significant enhancements were observed in other critical response parameters, including average base shear reductions of 63%, 78%, and 81%, and peak roof acceleration decreases of 24%, 19%, and 29% for the corresponding frames, all attained despite an inherent increase in structural stiffness and a consequent reduction in the fundamental vibration period. Additionally, the incorporation of the dampers led to a pronounced reduction in inter-story drift, averaging 62%, 60%, and 56% across the three structural configurations, effectively minimizing the potential for cumulative structural damage. In conclusion, the findings substantiate that the proposed dual-level steel pipe damper is highly effective in reducing global and inter-story drifts, base shear, and roof acceleration. Nevertheless, the ultimate efficiency of this passive control strategy remains contingent upon the intrinsic characteristics of the seismic input, the spatial distribution and number of dampers, and the specific dynamic properties of the host structure.

Following an earthquake, damaged reinforced concrete (RC) columns, as primary vertical load-bearing components, can influence the residual stability of buildings and the safety of post-earthquake operations. In damaged structures, access is often required for emergency response, preliminary inspection, damage assessment, and initial stabilization measures. Under such conditions, conventional permanent repair or strengthening techniques may not be suitable because they can require preparation time, wet construction processes, adhesive materials, or on-site welding. Therefore, temporary strengthening systems that can be rapidly installed through dry mechanical connections and subsequently removed after the emergency, inspection, and initial stabilization stages can provide a practical alternative for restoring a level of structural safety.
This study experimentally evaluates the cyclic performance of three temporary strengthening systems based on mechanically assembled bolted steel jackets for severely earthquake-damaged RC columns. For this purpose, one-third-scale RC column specimens were first subjected to quasi-static cyclic loading until a severe level of damage was developed. The damaged specimens were then temporarily strengthened using three different steel-jacket configurations.
The first system consisted of a bolted steel jacket equipped with energy-dissipating plates intended to enhance hysteretic energy dissipation while limiting further damage concentration. The second configuration incorporated a corrugated steel sheet within the jacket system, whereas the third configuration employed a steel jacket combined with a lateral knee brace. All strengthening systems were designed to be installed without concrete casting, bonding agents, or on-site welding, thereby facilitating rapid assembly and potential removal after completion of the temporary intervention.
Following installation, the strengthened specimens were re-tested under cyclic lateral loading in combination with a constant axial load to assess their post-damage structural response. The experimental results indicate that all three temporary strengthening systems improved the behavior of the damaged RC columns under repeated cyclic loading. In particular, the jackets reduced the concentration of damage within the plastic hinge region, restrained buckling of the longitudinal reinforcement, and enhanced the cyclic stability of the previously damaged specimens. The results further showed that the three configurations did not provide identical structural benefits. Among the investigated systems, the steel jacket equipped with energy-dissipating plates demonstrated the most favorable performance in maintaining effective stiffness and increasing energy dissipation capacity during cyclic loading. By contrast, the corrugated-sheet and knee-brace configurations showed comparatively greater effectiveness in improving confinement of the core concrete and maintaining stability at large displacement demands. These differences indicate that the response of temporarily strengthened columns depends on the mechanical characteristics and load-transfer mechanism of the selected jacket configuration.
The findings demonstrate the feasibility of using mechanically connected steel-jacket systems as temporary post-earthquake strengthening solutions for severely damaged RC columns. Their rapid installation, dry assembly, avoidance of field welding and adhesive materials, and removability after the emergency stage make them particularly relevant where immediate structural stabilization is required before detailed assessment or permanent rehabilitation. The study, therefore, supports the use of temporary steel strengthening as a practical strategy for improving the short-term safety, cyclic stability, and residual functionality of earthquake-damaged RC columns during emergency response and early recovery operations.

The desirable mechanism in reinforced concrete frames involves the formation of plastic flexural hinges in the beams, and if the columns yield, the hinges are also of the flexural type. In other words, in reinforced concrete frames, the ideal design of the columns is based on the flexural failure mode. To achieve this goal, all effective actions on column behavior must be considered. The methods for calculating the design shear of columns in the ACI318-19 standard have significant flaws that increase the probability of collapse in reinforced concrete moment frames. The results of laboratory and numerical studies on special moment frame systems indicate that the shear design of columns in spectral dynamic analysis is significantly lower than reality.
Additionally, the shear calculated from the mechanism of beams in the design of columns is completely incorrect and independent of the chosen method for distributing the flexural moments of the beams between the columns connected to the joint and should be avoided. However, the proposed methods for the shear design of the aforementioned columns are quite similar to the process of calculating the shear design of shear walls, which includes an over strength factor, a dynamic amplification factor, along with the effects of column positioning. In the design of columns, in addition to the mentioned coefficients, another important parameter that is not addressed in the ACI 318-19 standard is the phenomenon of elongation of reinforced concrete beams.
Due to the elongation of the beams, the maximum displacement occurs in the columns of the first story. This is because the bases of the first story columns are fixed to the foundation, and as the elongation of the beams, the lower supports of the first story columns cannot displace the foundation. Consequently, this causes movement in the upper part of the columns, resulting in a significant rotation in the exterior columns of the first story. The position of the columns is also very important in calculating the design shear force. Exterior columns on the first floor experience a significant shear difference compared to other columns due to the phenomenon of elongation of reinforced concrete beams, which necessitates the use of a column mechanism in their design shear calculations. The failure to apply the mentioned factors in conventional structural designs leads to a change in the failure mode of columns from flexural to flexural-shear or even shear, affecting the overall behavior of the structure and the design assumptions.
According to ASCE 7-22, the use of intermediate reinforced concrete moment-resisting frame is prohibited throughout Iran. The Chinese reinforced concrete building standard GB 50011-2010 limits the maximum allowable height of special reinforced concrete moment-resisting frame systems in very high intensity of seismicity to 24 meters. In this paper, using various standards and research by other researchers, computational approaches for shear design of reinforced concrete columns in moment frames are investigated, and the accuracy of each model is compared with numerical and experimental results, and necessary suggestions are provided. The high shear value in columns probably makes the use of modern materials, including high-strength reinforcement, inevitable in the design and retrofitting of reinforced concrete moment frames.

The growing demand for resilient and cost-effective structural systems in seismic regions has led to significant advances in performance-based seismic design (PBSD). Conventional design methodologies typically rely on deterministic hazard levels and prescriptive code requirements, which may not adequately capture the inherent uncertainty of earthquake ground motions and their probabilistic characteristics. Consequently, performance-based optimization frameworks that explicitly consider different levels of seismic hazard, structural performance objectives, and cost-effectiveness have gained increasing attention. In this study, an advanced performance-based optimal design (PBOD) methodology is developed and applied to special steel moment-resisting frames (SMRFs). The optimization framework employs the Center of Mass (CMO) metaheuristic algorithm as the core search strategy. Furthermore, probabilistic seismic hazard coefficients derived for Iran are incorporated into the optimization constraints to ensure realistic evaluation of seismic demand and structural performance.
The primary objective of this research is to obtain optimal structural designs that achieve satisfactory seismic performance while minimizing structural weight and material cost. To this end, two representative SMRFs—a three-story frame and a six-story frame—are considered as case studies. The optimization problem is formulated in terms of minimizing the total weight of the frame subject to performance constraints. These constraints include interstory drift ratios, global stability requirements, and collapse prevention limits defined by the PBSD framework. In order to capture the probabilistic nature of seismic demand, hazard coefficients corresponding to exceedance probabilities of 0.25, 0.30, and 0.40 are applied. These values are consistent with hazard curves obtained from the probabilistic seismic hazard analysis (PSHA) of Iran, ensuring that the designs are relevant to realistic seismic environments.
The optimization process is carried out using the CoM metaheuristic algorithm. This relatively new algorithm is inspired by the physical concept of the center of mass in mechanics, where the balance of forces leads to equilibrium at a central point. In the computational analogy, candidate solutions are treated as interacting entities in a search space, whose collective behavior tends toward the “center of mass” of optimality. This approach enables the algorithm to efficiently balance exploration and exploitation, avoiding premature convergence while ensuring global search capability. The CoM algorithm is coupled with pushover analysis in the optimization loop, providing nonlinear performance assessment at each iteration. By integrating structural analysis results into the optimization framework, the algorithm adaptively guides the search toward designs that satisfy seismic performance objectives while reducing overall material usage.
To further validate the structural performance of the optimized frames, Incremental Dynamic Analysis (IDA) is conducted. This technique provides detailed information about collapse capacity, fragility characteristics, and seismic demand-to-capacity relationships. Fragility curves are developed for the optimized frames to evaluate their probability of exceeding different damage states under increasing ground motion intensities. This comprehensive evaluation ensures that the optimized solutions are not only efficient in terms of weight reduction but also reliable under severe seismic events.
The results of the optimization process reveal important insights. First, designs obtained with lower hazard coefficients (e.g., 0.25) tend to be significantly more economical, as the imposed seismic demand is lower and the structural members are sized more efficiently. However, such designs may exhibit reduced robustness when subjected to extreme ground motions. In contrast, designs corresponding to higher hazard coefficients (e.g., 0.40) display greater redundancy and improved collapse resistance, albeit at the cost of higher structural weight and material usage. Thus, a trade-off emerges between economy and resilience.
The IDA results demonstrate that frames optimized under higher hazard coefficients achieve superior collapse capacities and exhibit lower fragility under increasing seismic demands. Specifically, the six-story frame designed with a hazard coefficient of 0.40 showed markedly reduced probability of collapse at high intensity levels compared to its counterpart designed with 0.25; However, the latter design achieved approximately 15% reduction in weight, illustrating the potential economic advantage of designs optimized under less conservative hazard levels.
Another key finding relates to interstory drift control. The results indicate that as hazard coefficients increase, drift constraints become more sensitive and dominate the optimization process. This highlights the importance of displacement-based performance objectives in PBSD frameworks. The study confirms that frames designed under higher hazard levels are better able to control drift, reducing the likelihood of non-structural damage and ensuring improved functional recovery after earthquakes.
Overall, this research demonstrates the effectiveness of combining the CMO metaheuristic algorithm with performance-based seismic design principles. The methodology successfully integrates nonlinear structural analysis, probabilistic hazard considerations, and advanced optimization to produce designs that balance economy and safety. Importantly, the study provides a practical framework that can be adapted for other structural systems and seismic regions, offering engineers a powerful tool for resilient design.
In conclusion, the findings emphasize that performance-based optimization using the CMO algorithm offers a rational and systematic approach to the seismic design of SMRFs. By explicitly incorporating probabilistic hazard levels, the method allows decision-makers to evaluate the trade-offs between cost efficiency and structural safety. The dual use of pushover and incremental dynamic analyses ensures a comprehensive assessment of both serviceability and collapse prevention performance objectives. The study not only highlights the applicability of metaheuristic optimization algorithms in structural engineering, but also provides valuable insights into the role of probabilistic hazard coefficients in shaping optimal design outcomes. Future research may extend this methodology to multi-objective optimization frameworks, integrating additional criteria such as life-cycle cost, repairability, and sustainability, thereby contributing to the development of truly resilient and sustainable seismic design practices.
